  18. =======
  19.     WinWisdom v4.0 consists of two programs for Windows 3.1.
  20. The first is a Quote-of-the-day program designed to display a 
  21. quote every time you start Windows.  The second program is
  22. the Reference/Editor program which can be used as a writers
  23. reference to search for quotes or it can be used to build and
  24. maintain your WinWisdom quotepacks.

  27. Registration
  28. ============
  29.     WinWisdom is shareware, it is NOT public domain.  The
  30. registration fee is $15 (US) with a free 15-day trial period.
  31. If you intend to use WinWisdom beyond the trial period, you must
  32. register by filling out the form in file REGISTER.TXT or providing
  33. the same information written on a sheet of paper and sending it
  34. along with your registration fee to:

  40. Remember to specify your disk size.

  42. With your registration, you will receive the following:
  43.     1 - The registered version without the registration reminders.
  44.     2 - The most current version available.
  45.     3 - The full quote packs (with thousands of quotes).
  46.     4 - A conversion program for converting quotepacks
  47.         from WinWisdom versions 3.0-3.2.
  48.  
  49. Remember, your registration supports shareware development.
  50. The ability to provide future releases depends on your support.

  53. Installation
  54. ============
  55.     A Setup program is provided which will de-compress all of the
  56. files, install them to the appropriate directory, and create a
  57. Program Manager group.  Just run SETUP.EXE from your distribution
  58. diskettes or self-extracting archive and follow the prompts.
  59.  
  60.     In order to use the WinWisdom pop-up quote-of-the-day feature,
  61. you will need to do one of the following: 
  62.  
  63. Option 1: 
  64. 1.  Using any text editor (Notepad is good for this, SysEdit is
  65.     better), open the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory. 
  66. 2. Several lines down from the top of the file, you will find
  67.    a line which begins with 'RUN='.  This line tells Windows 
  68.    what programs to run after it boots.  Change this line to 
  69.    read:  RUN=WINWIS.EXE [plus any other startup programs]. 
  70. 3. Save the WIN.INI file.  The next time you start Windows,
  71.    WinWisdom will pop-up displaying your quote-of-the-day.

  73. Option 2: 
  74. 1. Open the group that you have designated as your start-up group
  75.    (by default, the group is 'StartUp'). 
  76. 2. From the File menu, select 'New', then select 'Program Item'. 
  77. 3. Type WinWisdom as the description (or any thing else you want
  78.    to call it) and type WINWIS.EXE as the command line. 
  79. 4. If you put WinWisdom in a directory other than the Windows
  80.    directory, you will need to type the directory in the working
  81.    directory field, and add the directory to the command line
  82.    field.

  85. Problems
  86. ========
  87.  
  88. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:  The setup program will install some files
  89. into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Under certain circumstances,
  90. the setup program may fail if a file it is loading into your
  91. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory is already in your WINDOWS directory.
  92. If this happens, you will receive a message stating which file
  93. could not be loaded.  Search your WINDOWS directory for another
  94. file with the same name and rename it.  Run SETUP.EXE again.
  95.  
  96. ANOTHER NOTE:  If you are installing this version of WinWisdom
  97. on a system which has a previous release of WinWisdom on it,
  98. you will get a file error when you execute either of the 
  99. WinWisdom programs.  This release uses a completely new database
  100. which is incompatable with the old database.  Since the WINWIS.INI
  101. file used by your old version points to an old file, the new
  102. programs will not recognize the old files as WinWisdom files.
  103. When you receive the file error, just use 'Open' or 'Select file
  104. to use' from the 'File' menu to select one of the new files.
  105. You can prevent this problem from happening by deleting WINWIS.INI
  106. PRIOR to installing the new version.  Registered users will receive
  107. a conversion program which will convert the old file format into
  108. the new file format.  See REGISTER.TXT for information on how to
  109. register WinWisdom.

  112. Distribution
  113. ============
  114.     I retain the copyright on all versions.  You may distribute
  115. any version as long as you include this document with all
  116. of the original files and distribute the software unmodified, 
  117. free of charge (except for reasonable distribution fees), and
  118. without additional restrictions.  Vendors, please see VENDOR.TXT
  119. for important notes regarding distribution diskette creation.

  125. following files (Note: These files will probably be compressed
  126. and have the last character replaced by an underscore):
